Cling Tight & Fight
The Bible has been many things for most of us. When we have been sad or hopeless, the Bible has been a source of encouragement. When we have been curious about Jesus, it has given us stories to understand who He is. When we have wanted to teach our kids about following after God, it has been a teaching tool to guide our family in the ways of the Lord. But, how many of us when we think of our Bible would describe it as a weapon? I don’t think that is the first word that comes to mind for me when I think of my Bible, but that is exactly how the Bible describes itself:
Ephesians 6:17 tells us to take the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Yes, the Bible is good for comfort, strength, and peace, but it is also there for us to fight with! I want to be a woman that doesn’t just lie down and give up when hard times come my way. When I am anxious or there are attacks and unrest within my family, I need to stand up and fight!
2 Samuel 23:9-10
Eleazar was one of David’s top 3 mighty men of war. He was with David when they defied the Philistines assembled there for battle, and the men of Israel had departed. [Eleazar] arose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary and clung to the sword. The Lord wrought a great deliverance and victory that day; the men returned after him only to take the spoil.
This dude is awesome! Other than King David, EVERYONE else had left. EVERYONE else gave up hope. EVERYONE else quit! But not Eleazar. He refused to back down and take the easy way out. As long as he held onto his sword and fought, they were not defeated. Yes, he was weary, but he clung to his sword. Do we cling to the Word of God and keep on swinging with it by declaring it in every situation?
Eleazar was committed to his King and to the cause of his King. By clinging to his sword, they had victory over the enemy. At that point the others returned to enjoy the spoil. When you fight by using the Sword of the Spirit, it won’t just benefit you. Those around you will enjoy the spoil from your victories, too!
Lord, please help me to not be a victim of my surroundings. Instead help me to be victorious as I cling to the Word of God and use this Sword to fight!!
