Let's Play Pretend

Do you remember playing pretend as a child? You may have to really stretch your mind to go back to those days – they seem so long ago. Maybe it’s not so hard if you have children in your life. My boys easily transcend into another world as they become Ninja Turtles, fighting the bad guys all throughout my house! My girls easily became Mommy to their dolls even though they were far from becoming one. This is the power of imagination!

Now check out this verse:

Colossians 3:23

Work willingly/enthusiastically at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

This verse seems to involve some imagination to me: work…as though. Kind of like pretend! What a fun God that really knows how to teach us. He is telling us to imagine ourselves doing the task for the Lord, and as we do that it makes us become more enthusiastic and willing to do it.

Now why do I love this verse so much?? Because I don’t always feel like doing things for my husband! He is so good looking, and so fun, and so kind. However, he’s human, and he’s not always my favorite person on the planet at any given moment. Soooo, the next time I feel the Lord leading me to serve my husband in some way, or my husband asks me to do something (even if I’m just a little ticked off at him), I think I might play a game of pretend. I think I might close my eyes and picture the Lord asking me to do it. I think when I do that a sense of willingness and joy will rise up in me and even more than that I really think that a smile just might creep onto the face of Jesus :-).

Father, thank You for Your fun and inspiring Word. Please help me use my gift of imagination to glorify You. By Your Spirit, please help me do things for others as if I were doing them for You. I am not led by my feelings, but I am led by the Holy Spirit living in me!!
