Dark Cloud

Beginning many years ago, it was as if a dark cloud would come and hover over me from time to time. It’s like things would be going along fine and then maybe something bad happened or maybe it didn’t, but I would feel so depressed. Everything was darker in my mind - I didn’t find joy in the little things, and if I had my choice I would just lay in bed in my pajamas all day!

Dwelling on the Word for years, and wanting to set a better example for my daughters as they got older really helped a lot for me. One day I noticed a verse in particular that got my attention because it was like it was describing what I had experienced for so many years. It described a mind that had become dark and confused.

Romans 1:21

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.

Now this verse had my attention! A synonym for confused is clouded. I believe the living Word of God has given us the antidote for a mind that feels like it has a dark cloud parked over it.

1. We don’t just say that we know God, but we worship Him as God.

We sing songs to lift Him up. We praise Him in our hearts and our mouth.

People who know me well know that I love worship music. I won’t listen to regular secular music for too long without turning it to a worship tune. It’s because all that’s within me needs to focus on worshipping God. He is my life source and my song. I need to worship Him, or my mind starts getting dark and fuzzy.

2. We give Him thanks for everything we can think of all day long.

We thank Him for the job promotions; we thank Him for the birth of a new baby. We thank Him for helping us make wise decisions at the store, and we thank Him for that special hug we received from a child.

If we could timeline my thoughts and words for one day, I guarantee that you would see often and consistently thanks given up to God. I thank Him for everything possible, even when it’s silly like finding my keys. I would much rather be guilty of thanking Him for something He didn’t do than be guilty of not thanking Him for something He did do!

What about your timeline for your words and thoughts? Would we see thanks to God all day long from you? If yes, great! If no, that’s okay because now you know! The best part is that it is easy to start, and once you do it becomes extremely addicting. It becomes a normal part of your life that flows forth from your spirit without you even realizing it. It even spills over to being more thankful toward the people around you :-).

I can’t promise that you will never have another bad day, but I can promise that God’s Word is true. If you a make a choice to worship Him often throughout the week and thank Him for everything possible, His light will start to shine so much in your life that those dark clouds won’t stand a chance!

Father God, You are Light. In You there is no darkness. I don’t believe that a dark cloud has a place in my life when I am Your child. By Your Spirit, I pray that You will help me acknowledge You in my life through worshipping You and thanking You. I love You and thank You for every good gift You’ve given me and continue to give me.
