The Life of the Word

One of my favorite chapters in the whole Bible is John 1. It is so powerful that I can hardly read it without tears coming to my eyes.

John 1:1-4

In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

He was present originally with God.

All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.

In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.

Jesus didn’t just come into existence in the stable in Bethlehem. He was present before time existed, and nothing that we can see came into being without Him. In John, we see that Jesus is called the Word. Another highlight in John 1 is verse 14 -

The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus didn’t just appear out of nothing. He was the Word, and the Word actually put on flesh to be with us. The Word of God is not just letters on a page, it is alive and powerful!

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desire.

I love the Word of God! I love God and I love Jesus, so for me getting to read my Bible is getting to spend time with the God I love so much! Every time I read the Bible I feel life fusing into my spirit. I don’t go days without eating because my body would become weak and lifeless. If I go days without the Word of God, my spirit becomes weak and lifeless.

Reading my Bible is not a chore to me. Reading my Bible is vital to me. It is exciting and a privilege. I never know what wonderful treasure I will get to discover in this life breathing book.

John 15:5

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing."

Apart from Jesus I can do nothing. I love constantly remaining in the Word so that I can do the things I need to while I’m on this earth. I just can’t understand how something so powerful and wonderful and all together lovely could sit untouched and unread by someone who has come to know Jesus. Think of all that person is missing out on.

To say that we don’t have time to do something is to really say that we don’t think it’s important enough for us to spend our valuable time on. I can say without a doubt that the Word of God is important enough for anyone to spend their valuable time on. Jesus didn’t just fulfill the Word of God, He is the Word of God, and the Word of God walked among us. He died for us, and beat death once and for all for us. He loves us with an everlasting love that no one can stop.

The Word of God is alive and is worthy of my time and attention.

Jesus, You are the Word of God who put on flesh to come rescue me from my darkness. Your Word is Life to my spirit and Light to my soul. I don’t know enough and I’m not smart enough to try to make it through this world without You. Thank You for the Life that is breathed into me every time I open Your Word and read it.
