What is His Name?

May 5, 2015
3 min read

The book of Proverbs was written hundreds and hundreds of years before Christ came to Earth for us. Before Christ came, believers followed God as their Lord. They did not know Jesus yet, because Jesus had not yet been born and obediently given that name from His earthly parents. That is why I find Proverbs 30:4 so fascinating!

Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, if you know?

This verse hits me deep in my heart. The human writer of this book was writing about God’s Son who would not be born for maybe another half a century! This is just another reaffirmation that the Bible is not just any book. It is the very breath of God, spoken to us and for us. And it’s even more than that.

John 1:1

In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

The Word has been since before the beginning of time. Its truth cannot be measured because it is Truth. The Word of God is God Himself. That is why these lyrics to a popular song are a disgrace to me: "But we paraphrase a book written thirty-five-hundred years ago". This is not just some book written 3500 years ago. This is my God. He was here long before us, and He will be here long after.

Last night, my son was asking me about the return of Christ and I was telling him how He will have fire in His eyes. He asked if that would be scary. I told him, not since we’re on His team! We’ll say, “Oh yeah, we’re with Him!” I told Him I would look up the verse for Him to be sure I was telling Him correctly. When I did, I was so moved by the description of our Savior:

Revelations 19:11-13 –

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and He has a title (name) inscribed which He alone knows or can understand. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and the title by which He is called is The Word of God.

I deeply love the Word of God because I deeply love Jesus. He is True. His Word is Truth. If I believe Him and I believe it, I believe all of it. Not parts of it. All of it. I don’t doubt its accuracy. I believe God is all powerful enough to ensure that what He wanted in there is in there, and I hold tight to it with everything that I am. Our culture’s war against the accuracy of the Bible is not just an attack against a history book. It is attack against the integrity of my God. I reject their denial of the Truth found in His Word, and with everything I am I choose to believe all of it – all of Him.

Revelation 19:15, 16

From His mouth goes forth a sharp sword with which He can smite (afflict, strike) the nations; and He will shepherd and control them with a staff (scepter, rod) of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath and indignation of God the All-Ruler (the Almighty, the Omnipotent).

And on His garment (robe) and on His thigh He has a name (title) inscribed, king of kings and lord of lords.

What is His name, and what is His Son’s name? His name is Truth. His name if Faithful. His name is the Word of God. He is Almighty and Omnipotent. His name is King of Kings. His name is Lord of Lords. He is my Savior. He is my best friend. He is the Love of my life. His name is Jesus, the Messiah, and I love Him passionately because I am loved by Him passionately.

I love You so much, Jesus. You are my world. I think of You daily and desire more of You daily. There is no one I love more than You. You fill my heart so full. I love reading Your Word. It is life to my soul. It is water to my mind. It is more beautiful than all the love songs ever written. It is powerful and captivating. You are captivating. Thank You for loving me. Thank You for letting me experience You through Your Word. I will forever defend You and believe You. All of You.
