Song of Solomon 2:10

My lover said to me, “Rise up, my darling! Come away with me, my fair one!

This verse is so exciting! A lover is whisking the object of their affection away from mundane everyday life. I imagine it as being a sort of rescue from boring mild fondness to a place of passion and delight!

But here comes our practical side… We can always come up with reasons why we don’t need to go away alone with our spouse:

We don’t need to spend extra money right now

We are busy and don’t have time

We can just go on a date and come home like we normally do

None of these reasons are bad in themselves. It’s good to save money, it’s good to manage your time wisely, and it’s good to have regular date nights. But, there is just something special and magical about getting away from your usual routine with your lover. Having a change of scenery and a change of location can be surreal sometimes. Making a choice to not answer emails and voicemails and focus only on your spouse can have a profound impact on how connected we feel with our partner.

This verse looks so spontaneous to me! It has an element of excitement and anticipation. Our marriages need a little excitement in them! Homework, dishes, and work are just not that thrilling. We need something to look forward to with our spouse. My marriage is worth the investment of the money I spend on it. My marriage is worth the time it takes to plan a furlough with my spouse. My marriage is worth putting some spice and excitement into it!

I commit to finding ways to escape our normal routines, so that I can invest in fun excursions with my lover!

Father God, thank You for an awesome example of how exciting it can be between two lovers. Please help my husband and I find fun excursions we can go on together throughout the year. Please help me remember that my marriage is always worth the investment!
